She had the bizarre feeling of time bending all around her, as though she was from the past reading about the future, or from the future reading about the past.

About This Quote

This quote from the book, The Time Traveler's Wife, by Audrey Niffenegger, describes the experience of Claire, a woman with a condition called Chrono-Displacement Syndrome. Chrono-Displacement Syndrome causes the sufferer to perceive time as bending around her, so she can "read" the future and past through her own actions. The story is about a couple whose life is turned upside down when the wife has severe memory loss and starts to experience hallucinations: She had the bizarre feeling of time bending all around her, as though she was from the past reading about the future, or from the future reading about the past. She saw herself as an actress in a film of her life that was being played out only in her mind. There were scenes of herself as she once was - beautiful, strong, healthy, with a loving husband and child - but they were faded images within scenes of herself as she was now - ravaged by cancer, balding and heavily scarred.

She could see herself walking towards another woman who stood on a bridge over a dark river. The woman had long golden hair. She wore a ball gown made of cobwebs.

As they approached each other across the bridge their faces grew closer together. The cobwebs melted away to reveal ashes of what looked like bones... Claire had never seen this vision before in any version of her life that she could remember, but it was real to her now because it happened every time she tried to fight her illness. The novel is one part love story and one part suspense thriller dealing with Claire's condition and how it affects everyone involved with her family.
